Thus far 2011 has been a relatively benign year for financial markets. Though the global recovery has continued, it has not been as smooth and robust as many policymakers would have hoped and there is still concern over how the Greek debt problem will be resolved. Despite continued uncertainties over the path to recovery, the financial market stability exhibited in the first half of this year provides the right background against which recovery can continue. However, there are still a number of potential sources of future market volatility: it remains to be seen whether the Eurozone has the political will to keep itself intact and it is still unclear how the eventual tightening of monetary conditions in developed markets will play out.
